forklog.media Scientists Develop Quantum Sensor Scheme to Detect Altermagnets

Physicists from the University of Buffalo have introduced a theoretical scheme for a quantum sensor designed to detect altermagnets—a new class of magnetic materials. This was reported by Quantum Insider. The study was published in Physical Review Letters. It does not introduce a new type of magnetism but rather a method to detect altermagnetic order. The system currently exists only on paper, with experimental verification yet to come. The concept involves using a diamond with a nitrogen-vacancy (NV-center) defect: a nitrogen atom and an adjacent vacancy in the lattice. This defect is sensitive to local magnetic fields. It is placed near a suspected altermagnet, with its spin oriented in various directions to measure relaxation rates. Anisotropic relaxation could indicate a complex magnetic order—a hallmark of altermagnets. The authors advocate for a less invasive approach. Existing methods often affect the sample too strongly, making it difficult to separate the material's intrinsic properties from measurement effects. The corresponding author is Jamir Marino, an assistant professor of physics at the University of Buffalo. Co-authors include Libor Šmejkal and Jairo Sinova from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, who are credited with first proposing the concept of altermagnets. The study also involved Hossein Hosseinnabadi and V.A.S.V. Bittencourt. Interest in altermagnets is growing due to their potential applications in electronics. These materials combine zero net magnetization, like antiferromagnets, with the electronic effects of ferromagnets. The potential lies in faster and more energy-efficient information transfer. Signs of altermagnetism have already been observed in several materials. Theoretical calculations point to over 200 potential compounds, increasing the demand for precise identification methods. The key outcome of the study is not a ready-made sensor but a measurement protocol. This could form the basis for future experiments to search for and confirm altermagnetic order. In May, Quantinuum and energy giant BP launched a joint project to apply quantum computing for subsurface sensing and mapping of the Earth's interior.

forklog.media Aave Tightens Listing Standards Following $293 Million rsETH Incident

The Aave protocol has revised its asset listing standards following the April incident involving rsETH, which threatened the project with a potential bad debt of hundreds of millions of dollars. https://t.co/ixfuSrVKA8— Aave (@aave) May 31, 2026 The incident was caused by a verification failure in the LayerZero bridge used by the Kelp project, rather than a vulnerability in the lending platform's smart contracts. An attacker exploited a configuration error in one of the verifiers to forge a cross-chain message and issue 116,500 unsecured rsETH tokens ($293 million). The assets were deposited into Aave as collateral. Since rsETH was in eMode with a high LTV (93%), the attacker borrowed liquid assets that the protocol would not be able to recover after rsETH devaluation. The new framework for versions V3, V4, and Horizon expands risk assessment criteria. In addition to volatility and liquidity, Aave will now consider: the reliability of bridge infrastructure and the number of token wrapping layers; dependencies on external oracles and custodians; technical architecture (compliance with ERC-20, admin rights, and code upgradeability); operational security of the asset issuer. The team also proposed implementing automated protective mechanisms. These would allow the LTV of an asset to be instantly reset upon reaching critical risk thresholds, without waiting for governance decisions. Risk managers have already made around 295 adjustments to the parameters of V3 markets, including reducing supply and borrowing limits to minimize the impact of similar incidents.  Auditors from OpenZeppelin confirmed that the incident resulted from miscalculations in infrastructure configuration and risk management, rather than bugs in Aave or Kelp's code. On May 25, Kelp restored rsETH collateral, with the team sending a final tranche of 20,373 rsETH to the LayerZero smart contract.

forklog.media Citi Forecasts Tokenization Market to Reach $5.5 Trillion

Citi analysts anticipate that the market for tokenized securities will grow to $5.5 trillion by 2030, according to a report by CoinDesk referencing the bank's report Tokenization 2030: Wall Street On-Chain. Currently, the segment is valued at approximately $17 billion. Citi's base scenario projects a range of $2.7-8.2 trillion, depending on the pace of adoption. The bank estimates that by 2030, 10% of short-term U.S. Treasury securities and 3% of the U.S. public equity market could transition to blockchain. Citi believes stablecoins could generate additional demand for U.S. government bonds up to $1 trillion. Previously, the bank had issued more cautious forecasts. In the report Money, Tokens, and Games, it was projected that $4 trillion of tokenized financial and real assets would be in private markets by 2030. Separately, analysts estimated the market for tokenized stocks at $4-5 trillion and around $1 trillion in trade finance and collateral segments. Citi is already testing the infrastructure. In November 2024, the bank, along with Fidelity International, launched a pilot with a tokenized money market fund and a digital currency swap. At that time, Citi forecasted the segment to grow to $400 billion by 2030. In May, it was revealed that the U.S. is preparing a regulatory framework for trading tokenized securities. In November 2025, the IOSCO stated that RWA creates new vulnerabilities, despite its potential to transform the issuance and trading of financial assets. In May, the market capitalization of tokenized U.S. government bonds on Ethereum reached a record $8 billion.
